After spending a minimum of 3 & a half hours of different configurations on a laptop (XP SP3 Enterprise) & still making no progress getting the software installed, I contacted Seagate support.The issue was that the Microsoft libraries would not install from the Seagate drive & the provided installer attempted to download it /w failure every time. Housing is solid plastic and feels durable.Within 2-3 seconds device was recognized on USB2.0 / SATA combo port with no issues.I performed these tests on two different systems: the first test on a 2-year old laptop running windows XP SP3, using USB 2.0 the USB 3.0 tests were conducted on a 2012-build Win 7 64 desktop.Cons: The cons are /w the Seagate backup software. Mac OS X can read hard drives formatted as NTFS but write access is not available without.Drive is small and solid feeling.
I brought him up to speed, he was quick & to the point, admitting that there is a problem /w the installer package for their software. The second tech was professional. About 20 seconds later, another tech picked me up and dusted me off with many apologies for their colleague's unprofessional behavior. I actually had to go through 2 support techs after I read what the issues were, the first tech who took my call dropped me out of the queue like a hot potato. This portion of the installer is, in its own design, provisioned by a third party there are currently no downloads available to be able to patch this failure.Having checked several blogs & forums (including Seagate's), I explained what failures I had encountered to Seagate tech support & they acknowledged there is an on-going problem with the installer and the "Nero packager" that is used to install Seagate Dashboard.
I replied that remoting in is NOT an option & used the offered link to the older Seagate Manager, which I downloaded & installed. The only means of installing the stand-alone MSI would be to allow Seagate to remote into to my equipment & manually tweak it. The tech said there was a way around the issue by using the MSI installer, but the standalone installer is not provided to the end user due to the instability it will cause if improperly installed. Hopefully this means that Nero will release an updated install packager used to install Seagate's software. The problem was cited as "Nero's" and there is no current available fix to be released to the public, but work is in progress.
While the 1TB Seagate hard drive is providing flawless service and pleasing transfer speeds, the included software does not. I found the software to be slow to load & respond, which on par /w other reports in the blogs & forums nevertheless, the software works - in its own time (albeit /w some patience)Overall Review: I am still aghast and annoyed that Seagate QA would have let something like this slip out to the consumer with their product's reputation left hanging on a 3rd-party to provide a working install. The Seagate Dashboard installer seemed to have some hesitancy but was able to pull in ALL libraries & install the reboot validator. I chose a Win7 64bit (Enterprise) platform as the next test subject.
Upon comparative testing, I prefer the "snappy" response that Seagate Manager provides. The only one to work for me on both, XP and Win7, was the Seagate Manager. Both software, (Seagate Manager and Seagate Dashboard ), were tested on Win7 and worked. I would have thought that Windows 7 + would have been at least part of the problem, but it seems that this instance of XP and the Seagate Dashboard installer have a mutual hatred for each other with XP gaining the upper hand. In my particular case, both systems are joined to a domain. In some of the forums, it was mentioned that there may be an issue with computers joined to a domain.
5 stars if you need these pros, or 3 stars if you are bothered by cons.Amazing 1TB in 2.5 inch format, case slightly larger than 9.5mm thick drive.Low power consumption drive, powered via USB 3.0 cable (USB 2.0 compatible).Advanced twin 500GB platter capacity gives better than 7200RPM drive performance, only when reading single large sequential (unbroken) files.Up to 105 to 110 MB/s sequential 2MB read/write performance. For me, the sacrifice of the Facebook and Flicker backup option throws the doors wide open to using other Retail, BSD, GPL, GNU or Free backup software.
However, it is great to backup single large files up to 1TB total.Either Mac Time Machine reformat required, or Windows NTFS default format but not both. Click-click not funny.Highly recommend owners attach rubber feet (not include) or velcro to a fixed surface.Real world use 28 MB/s read/write performance (non sequential) lower than comparable 38 MB/s 7200RPM drives, including if used with Windows Backup software.5400 RPM slow speed causes latency performance bottleneck with heavy workload or many small files.USB 3.0 and NCQ : Native Command Queuing does not overcome 5400 RPM latency bottleneck on many small files.Drive may hang older PCs and laptops because USB 3.0 and multi core CPU helps prevent hangs.Windows backup software will be useless for many because of slow real world performance and latency bottleneck. As a package this drive is great value.Compact 1TB storage 2.5 format with 18 inch cable is perfect for mobile use.Slick plastic case looks great, but spinning drive is easily destroyed if slips or dropped in operation.I have personally destroyed a similar drive that slipped off my mini-tower PC onto the carpet.
